In searching for another obituary, I sadly stumbled across Rev. Brittain’s Obituary. He was my first piano teacher probably back in 1959, coming to our home on Brank Cove Road to give me lessons. I had a delightfully brief visit with him in his home perhaps 5-6 years ago on one of my visits back to Western NC. He sparked my love for music through that first piano primer … John Thimpson’s “Teaching Little Fungers To Play” and I shall forever be grateful for his tutelage. Blessings to the family!

IAS far as I am concerned, Wendell Brittain was the ultimate preacher. He could provide any music that complemented his preaching words. His compassion & encouragement were so helpful in triying times & his laughter, smile & humor made him a joy to b around. Even his problems made him human. We as church members have a tendency to put pastors on pedistals thinking their problems aren't hard for them since "they are so close to God" . We expect them to b available at our beckon call. Wendell served us well, but most important of all, he served the Lord. Thankful we knew him, called him our Pastor & friend. We celebrate his life, talents. Praying for the Holy Spirit to comfort his family. I know he has heard the words ! "Well done, good & faithful servant". In sympathy, love & prayers. Betty Jo Smathers. Canton, NC,

My family and I have many fond memories of the Rev. Britain and of the time he spent at Morning Star UMC. We particularly remember how much he helped my family through my fathers extended illness.we are eternally grateful for that. But on to something lighter. He had an awesome sense of humor. The church was having a sunrise service and the service started with a trumpet solo by Rev. Brittain. However, he had situated himself behind a huge tombstone so when he started playing he stepped out from behind the tombstone which startled the congregation. We thought we were witnessing the second coming! So yes he was my friend and I will miss him.Leslie Smathers Canton, NC

Wendy and Cara and family,
May the good news that your father proclaimed in word and music comfort you in your grief. We are thankful for Wendell’s life, and I remember the time I worked with him in the summer of 1978 with gratitude. He also was a guest musician at my last church before retiring, where he had served also. And Wendy, it was so good to have seen you when I was serving in Asheville and Weaverville, many years after the time we share in Candler. Blessings and peace with you all,
Perry Miller (Winston-Salem, NC)
