2 Corinthians 1:3,4 gives us the assurance that "the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of tender mercies" is "the God of all comfort" and he "comforts us in all our trials." James 5:11; God "is very tender in affection ["very compassionate"] and merciful." Please accept my sincere condolences. Always remember God loves you and he cares for you! (Psalm 36:7; 1 Peter 5:7)

I am so sorry that I was unable to attend Mrs. Hughes funeral service. I started Mars Hill College in 1965, about the time she started teaching there. Of all the teachers I had as an English major, Mrs. Hughes was my favorite. I will never forget American Literature and how much I enjoyed that class because of her.
Later in my teaching career, Mrs. Hughes came to North Buncombe High to help with Southern Association evaluations. She sat in my class to observe. I remember her saying that she felt as if she was watching herself teach! What an honor that was to me because she had been my methods teacher at Mars Hill.
We have corresponded several times over the years. I loved this lady! So real and so much a child of God.

My deepest condolences to Bud and Scott and all her family and friends. Betty Hughes was one of my favorite people for my whole life. She had a great deal of influence on my life as a teenager. I loved her dearly. I am so sad that she is gone, but I know she has joined that “great cloud of witnesses,” and one day we will all be together again! in Christ, life is changed, not ended. Thanks be to God.

As a student at Mars Hill University, Betty Hughes shared much subject matter knowledge in my English classes. Above all, we marveled at that AND in her humanity to others. She definitely was in her element daily in the classroom, administering heartfelt information with gusto, warmth, and her unique laughter. She became my adviser, mentor, and a tremendous influence in my decision to become an educator. Over the years, I was privileged to attend her SS class at FBC, and relished in that attendance, and in her ability to keep us spellbound in her "Cornbread Language" delivery (her term). Above all, I cherished her friendship, advice as an Educator, and as a Christian example.
Our profound thanks to her family for sharing Betty Hughes with the world. Know that she lives on in you, and although the world has lost a treasure, we will never forget the BLESSINGS she shared with us. May The Lord guide you, going forward.

I wish I could be with you today and tomorrow. My heart will be there. Aunt Betty was such a joy to be around. She was the glue that held the family together. I knew if I needed questions answered I could find out from her. Loved to listen to her thoughtful opinions ( and heated, sometimes)on politics and the Southern Baptists! A spillover from the early days of raucous
family discussions around the Sunday dinner table! She was articulate and smart and never minced her words. A true Southern lady.I will miss her terribly. All my love to her dear family. Cousin Abbey

Betty was my organist, my advisor in college, my teacher, my mentor, and especially, my friend. She taught me so many things over the years about life and how not to take life or myself too seriously. I will miss her and her wonderful laughter. She has left this world a much better place. May all of you find peace and comfort in the rich life she lived.

My Aunt Betty Jean is my mom, Carrie Lee Farthing Greer's, younger sister by 18 months, I think. My mom is the last of the seven children living.
I have so many pleasant memories of my Aunt Betty Jean, and I'm heart broken that she's gone. As a child, I spent every summer in Boone after my parents and I moved to Florida to a warmer climate. We stayed at my grandmother's house next to Buddy and Betty Jean and Bud and Scott. I have many happy memories of Aunt Betty Jean, but I have a few favorites. I loved the way she referred to us kids as young uns. She was so loving and kind to everyone. I also loved her cooking, especially her green beans and seven layer cookies! I'm so glad she gave me a copy of her cookbook, although I'll never be able to prepare beans like she did. I loved hearing her tell family stories, which I was blessed to hear last summer when my daughter and grandson and I went to visit her. You are in our memories, till we meet again....
