I was deeply saddened to hear of Rodney's passing and funeral yesterday. I am praying for his wife and children, his mom and dad, sister and other family members, friends and coworkers. I went to Ragsdale High School and attended NC State with Rodney. We lived together for several years, both of us working hard to achieve our life goals. He was a great friend, like a brother, and one of the smartest people that I had ever met. I was very proud of him when he got into Wake Forest and then became a public servant as a prosecutor in Asheville. I was fortunate enough to attend his wedding as well. I will remember Rodney for as long as I live as will many, many other people who has know him over the years. Rest in peace and God bless your soul.

Candace and sons,
I was so sorry to hear of Rodney’s passing. I was the Clerk in Superior Court when he began his position there as an Assistant DA. He was one of those young attorneys I took under my wing— loved him, impressed with his mind, integrity and work ethic. He brought the engagement ring he bought you to my office. He was so proud and blessed that you came into his life. My heart aches for you and the boys in the loss of your husband and father. May you find peace and healing through your faith and comfort knowing so many have you in their thoughts and prayers.

Rodney was a good soul. I knew him in law school at WFU - Section 1 in our 1L year. Always a helpful and kind person. He had a practical approach to understanding the law and didn't get caught up in the weeds.

I met Rodney, who my favorite bartender at Daryl's, while he was at NC State. I was already practicing law in Asheville but would return to Raleigh to visit friends. Later Ron hired him as an ADA & we had a great working relationship. He was tough to guard while playing basketball after work on many occasions, and for some reason we were usually on opposite teams. Although I did not know his family personally, I do know how much he loved them & how his world revolved around his kids. It is my hope that all can find peace in fond memories & in knowing that he will always be in their hearts.

Miss that famous side grin, quick whit, deep thinking and honesty in the tough times. Truly missed by many. Love you guys and will pursue meals and time. As the fog and quiet passes along we will be there . The creator and ABBA has everything covered even when it all feels lost and confusing. HE alone knows what you need and can and will provide. I can’t do chess but checkers and legos for sure.

It is with great sadness that I write this. There was only one Rodney, and he made a difference in this world. He was a great person, wonderful lawyer, and someone who knew how to make people laugh. It was a great privilege to know him and to be a colleague. It is impossible to convey how loved he was and how missed he will be.

To the family of Rod Hasty: My heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with you in your loss. I had the privilege of working with Rod sporadically from 2004-2008 when I served as roving court reporter for the Western District and I was impressed by his knowledge of the law, his compassion for
the people he served and his courtroom demeanor, as well as his kindness to a lowly court reporter. I remember him well and deeply regret his passing. May God wrap you in His loving arms and comfort you as you grieve.

Rodney was a force to be reckoned with in the courtroom! During the 4-weeks that I observed him leading the prosecution team that ultimately won justice for my family, I was truly impressed by the tenacity he displayed during the fight, and the compassion he shared with all of us. He was a fierce advocate for justice, and during that 4-week period, we felt that he and the entire team that he led wore superhuman capes! It was a privilege to meet Candace when she was still a fiancée, and offer her our thanks for so willingly sharing so much of Rodney’s valuable time in our cause. We as a family grieve with you now Candace, and offer our truly heartfelt condolences.

I'm going to miss Rodney so much personally and professionally -- which is to say in all manner of ways. He was such a resource. He was always so giving, smart, always present, never unavailable, loyal, reliable, dependable, etc, etc, etc. Just can't say enough about Rodney. The DA's Office has lost a key man for sure, but so has our community. But as I grieve what we have lost here in the Courthouse, my thoughts and prayers turn to his sons and family and though words do not capture what I want to fully express, I hope his boys always know their dad loved them like nothing else and that everything he did he did for them.
