Obituary of Dean Plemmons

MEBANE - Rufus Dean Plemmons, age 85, of Mebane, passed away January 10, 2021, in Burlington, NC.

Dean was born May 10, 1935 in Spring Creek, NC, to the late Farida and Viola Plemmons. After high school, he joined the United States Army in 1955 and served honorably during the Korean War. He retired from the Asheville Fire Department as a Captain after 30 years of service. Dean was a true family man who enjoyed golfing, gardening, bird watching, and taking his grandchildren on “safaris.” Dean had a servant’s heart and would always go the extra mile for anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Wiley, Elsie, W.O., Helen, Lillian, J.R., Calvin, and Blaine.

Dean is survived by his devoted wife, Sue Plemmons of Mebane, NC; daughters, Debra Gaskins (James) of Summerville, SC, and Beverly Shuford (Hoyt) of Hillsborough, NC; sister, Joy Radford (Ben) of Asheville, NC; and brother, David Plemmons (Ursula) of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Kelley Sunby (Jon) of Las Vegas, NV, Hannah Gaskins of Summerville, SC, Adrienne Byam (Nick) of Elfand, NC, Aaron Shuford (Janelle) of Boone, NC, and Kevin Shuford (Samantha) of Hillsborough, NC; as well as four great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the VA Home-based Primary Care and Brookdale Burlington Memory Care.

To the end of his days, Dean was a good man, a godly man, a man to look up to and admire.  He will be missed.

Due to Covid-19, the family has chosen to have a private ceremony.

The private funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 15, 2020 in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Avenue, Weaverville, NC.  Reverend Hoyt Shuford of Fairview Baptist Church, Hillsborough, NC, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens in Asheville, NC.
