Obituary of Dorothy Goodwin Coker

Dorothy Goodwin Coker, age 88, of Alexander, went to heaven Thursday, September 23, 2021, at her home.

 

Mrs. Coker was born June 18, 1933, in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late John A. and Nellie May Goodwin.  In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Louis Coker, Sr. who died in January 2021; a daughter, Alberta Coker Deckard; and three brothers, Johnny, Jack, and Dwight Goodwin. She was formerly employed as an artist at AB Emblem Company and Wayne Watson Company in Georgia.  She was an artist of many talents.  In addition to drawing and painting, she loved making wreaths, Christmas ornaments, Nativities, Christmas trees, and many more crafts.  She was a great cook, and loved baking!  Jesus and her family were most important to her.  She loved having fun and getting together to play cards, games, Christmas Bingo, camping, boating, hiking up Stone Mountain, Sunday afternoon picnics and playing softball.  She will also be remembered by many for her knowledge of the scripture, and her willingness to share that knowledge.

 

Surviving are her children, Louis “Buster” Coker, Jr. and wife Angie of Alexander, Mary Banks and husband Doug, Beverly Fort and husband Tom, Gwen Coker Green, Tommy Coker and wife Carol all of GA; siblings, Florence Spangler and husband S.L., Bill Goodwin and wife Betty, Loretta Houser and husband Gerald, Nellie Ruth Buckner, and Brenda Carver and husband Johnnie; brother-in-law, John Coker; thirteen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.

 

Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 2, 2021 in Macedonia Baptist Church, Jenkins Valley Road, Alexander. Reverend Glenn Meadows will officiate. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory, Asheville.

 

The family will receive friends one hour  prior to the funeral service at the church.
