Obituary of Alfred Fulton "Fulty" Roberts, Jr.

ASHEVILLE  – A. Fulton “Fulty” Roberts, Jr. of Asheville, age 90, died Monday, December 13, 2021.

A native of Asheville, he was born May 21, 1931, to the late A. Fulton Roberts, Sr. and Olive Buckner Roberts.

Fulty was a graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School, Embry-Riddle School of Aviation and Asheville-Biltmore Junior College. He was the co-owner with his brother, Guy of the family business, Asheville Cleaners and Dyers, established in Asheville in 1938.

He served with honor in the Army Occupational Forces in Germany after World War II. A member and officer of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Miss Asheville pageant in 1961, when Maria Beale Fletcher went on to win Miss America. He spent 14 years as a sponsor and coach for the North Asheville Little League program. A past president and member of the North Asheville Optimist Club, he also served on the board of the North Carolina Dry Cleaners Association. Fulty was a member of Central United Methodist.

He is preceded in death by sisters, Sarah Roberts Boone and Lucille Roberts Neilson; and brother, Guy D. Roberts, Sr.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Sally Matthews Roberts; sons, Steven Roberts and wife Rhonda of Asheville and John Roberts and wife Tracy of Charlotte; granddaughter, Jenna; and sisters, Susie Ray and Marie Flowers.

His funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 19, 2021, in the Chapel of West Funeral Home, 17 Merrimon Ave., Weaverville. Reverend Dr. Robert Blackburn will officiate. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Sunday prior to the service at the funeral home
