I am so saddened by Felton’s passing. I got to know Felton when I came to Mars Hill as the head football coach in 1983. He worked with us that year as a volunteer and did an outstanding job. I hired him as a full time assistant coach for the 1984 season. We coached the offense together. After leaving Mars Hill for Wofford, the only contact I had with him was when Wofford played Mars Hill in 1985 and 1986. He was on Steve Payton’s staff then and when Steve left for private business, Felton deserved his promotion as the Mars Hill head football coach. I followed his progress with the Mars Hill program, but lost touch after that. Over the last several years, we reconnected via Facebook. I really appreciated the consistency of his faith in Jesus that was often demonstrated in his comments. Long live our precious memories of Felton. I am so thankful for the life he lived. His influence will be eternal.

Felton was an especially kind man. Always enjoyed being in his presence. Many times he and Mary welcomed me into their home and it was wonderful spending time with them. Mary, I am shocked and deeply saddened that you have lost your soulmate. I know his passing leaves you heart broken. I'm asking the Lord to comfort you and your family, to keep you especially close in the days ahead. I love you.

I am very saddened to hear of Coach Stephens' passing. He was many things to many people, but the most important was that he was a man of God whose main concern was in proclaiming the Gospel of Christ. We need more Men of Faith such as Coach Stephens in this world; he will be sorely missed. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Alton Bradley NBHS '82

Felton will be missed by so many because he did so much for so many. I had the honor and privilege of working with Felton at Clyde A. Erwin High School. He impressed me in so many ways. What impressed me the most was that he was such a good man. And such a sincere good man. Today my thoughts are with Mary and all of Felton's family. I know this is such a difficult time and I truly hope his life will be celebrated for all the good he did. An amazingly good man.

I met Coach Stephens as a student at NBHS. I was head cheerleader and would meet with him before pep rallies. He inspired me to volunteer as a coach for youth cheerleaders and I usually got the girls who were brand new, and loved it. He encouraged me to pursue college and coached me through the interview process and wrote a letter of recommendation that helped me to get a scholarship at Mars Hill. I wouldn’t have been able to afford it otherwise. I didn’t make the football cheerleading squad but I did make it for the women’s basketball team and I would see him at the home games. In the beginning, I was the outcast because I was the only one who wasn’t rich. But when the head coach came over to me to say hello and give me a hug, suddenly everyone wanted to be my friend. Coach Stephens changed my life. He believed in me, prayed with me, drove me to those little league games when I was scared as a new coach to little girls and encouraged me to be great. I love you Coach and thank you, I’ll never forget you.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Felton's family. I have known Felton since we competed against each other in football in high school. We were both receivers and wore the same number, 86. He was a competitor but a gracious competitor. I then had the opportunity to work with him as a coach at North Buncombe, the best coaching experience I ever had. As chance would have it I then had the opportunity to work with Felton as an administrator at Erwin High School. Throughout my experiences he was always the ultimate professional. He always treated students, staff, and parents with dignity and respect. You knew when you worked with Felton that you would be treated with integrity and honesty. It was a privilege to work with such a wonderful and generous person.
I am very saddened by his loss.

Felton and I were born nine days apart. We went to Weaverville school and North Buncombe as well as Mars Hill for our college days. He was always a fair-minded people person. He was an exemplary man in every sense of the word. I grieve for the family's loss of his presence. However, he is ever present. Look at all those photos of all the memories that still survive. Bless you all and let your hearts not be troubled. We all had the privilege and joy of knowing a really fine man.

I'm so sorry to hear about Felton. Felton was my cousin. I haven't seen much of him in adult life but have wonderful memories of Felton, Lane and his entire family growing up. He obviously had a huge positive impact on a lot of lives but he did his job well and will be well rewarded in the afterlife. Part of our great hope is we will all see each other again. We had a strong Christian family so it's going to be quite a reunion when that day comes. In the meantime, he will definitely be missed.

Prayers to the Family of Coach Stephens. Truly Devine intervention with guiding this kid from New Jersey to Mars Hill College to play for Coach Stephens. Can't help to feel like he's standing right behind me, watching my steps like he did during our Offensive Line drills. Lord knows I tested his patience, but he never gave up on me or stopped loving me. His influence on my life cannot be overstated. Still trying to make the right steps Coach.
Thank you and Love you Coach

Felton, along with his teammates Mike Laster, Scovelle Roberts and others and I were intense competitors on the basketball court in 1963/64 when they were Black Hawks and I was a Rocket. Off the court we were friends. Felton had style and grace > something this world needs a lot more of in these challenging times. It is very apparent that Felton made a difference in many lives. I am saddened to learn of Felton's passing. To his family and many friends my deepest sympathy. Gerry Huntley. A.C. Reynolds Class of 1965. 828-318-4013. gerryh1947@yahoo.com

Comfort. Joy. Love. LEGACY. When I think of Felton, those are some of the first words that come to mind. Felton had a way of bringing comfort to difficult times and love to all situations. In all my years of knowing him, I never saw him as anything but joyful - even in difficult circumstances. Serving on the RMCA board with him was such a joy. I loved hearing him humbly pray for wisdom, and cherish how freely he shared that wisdom with others. I will always treasure such sweet memories of Felton - intense domino games after family dinners (Felton was always one of the fiercest competitors!), graduations, holidays, mentoring me (and countless others) at Christ United Methodist Church and throughout high school, his infectious laughter and so many other precious memories. I can’t imagine how much Felton loves Heaven, and that brings so much peace in this loss.
Felton’s legacy will live on powerfully. He fought the good fight. He finished the race. And I am certain he heard, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” I love you, Felton, and I can’t wait until I can hug you again.
