I knew Gerald for many years, he was a year behind me at NBHS. He was a fellow who displayed tremendous courage throughout his life, and I always admired him greatly for that. He taught us all lessons in how to live life despite whatever may be thrown at us. He will always remain an inspiration to me. My deepest condolences to his family. -Al Bradley

The Barn at Paint Fork posted a condolence

Today, all of the Ford owners in Western North Carolina can set themselves at ease from the perpetual harassment from one of the most hard core Chevrolet fans on the planet, who has retired his post to take a job in heaven harassing the good Lord for ever making a Ford.
They say that adversity is a man’s introduction to himself, and I believe there is no better example of this truth in our world, than Gerald Carswell. For those that knew Gerald, knew his smile, and kind words. His willingness to help and give hugs. Gerald had a spirit that would make any man or woman take pause to look inside themselves and ponder their own lives. Undoubtedly, every person who has meet Gerald has taken the time to wonder what life was like through his eyes and then taken those visions as the very medicine needed to improve themselves in some way. It was his life’s experiences that had a way of teaching us that life can be harder, and despite this, each of us can and should be better people. Gerald had the best, most sweet spirit that washed over everyone he met. Through most of his adult life, Gerald faced daily adversities that none of us could ever imagine, yet he did so with seeming ease, and an attitude that was unsurpassed. Gerald was simply an amazing man and friend to us all. He will always be remembered for his strength and will which was most inspirational.
To say that we are shocked and speechless today as we mourn the loss of our friend is much more than an understatement: it is actually life changing. Gerald was our Chief of Security at The Barn, and more than anyone we know, deserved that title because he did not know a stranger, and his presence alone had an undeniable calming that would take over any room or situation. There was virtually no need for protection and security in his presence because of this fact. He did his job just by being present, and as proof of this, we know he never lifted a finger to do his job! We know he would laugh at this because he was just that kind of guy! It should be said that our 2021 concert season would have never happened if not for the absolute insistence from Gerald to open our doors and let the community enjoy our venue. He was adamant and persistent about the necessity of friends, family and neighbors getting out and getting back to our normal lives. We loved his passion about these things and his unwavering ability to laugh and joke not only at each of us, but at himself as well. Gerald could sure take a joke like a pro. We cannot thank him for enough for everything he did to help us here at The Barn, nor can we ever replace him. We love you from the bottom of our hearts.
Today we are at a total loss and disbelief that adversity has once again chosen Gerald in the gravest of ways, taking him from us here on Earth. Life is simply not fair, brutal even. Yet for all that Gerald has faced, he has converted those challenges and given back to each of us, returns we will never forget nor repay. Even today as he has left us, Gerald has each of us reflecting on our own lives, our own troubles, forcing us to shed our self-pity and excuses and trudge on to overcome what lies ahead. Gerald would not want it any other way. Keep moving and improving, because sitting still or accepting defeat is simply not an option. That is how Gerald Carswell lived his life, more so than anyone you or I know. He was simply and entirely inspirational, and always will be now and forever. We loved him for it, and just hope that he knew exactly how much we appreciated him, his spirt and ability to move us all. Perhaps he did, or didn’t know but hero’s never need affirmation, they simply need to be. Gerald Carswell was and always will be a hero to us all. Godspeed Gerald we already miss you terribly. May you rest in peace for eternity.
