I was saddened to hear of Joretta’s passing.. As a teenager, I used to stop and talk to her and John Hugh on my way to the pool in the summer; and try to desperately sneak past her dogs while slipping out at night! As a young mother, later I would run my first child up to Joretta’s for trusted first aid after an injury. What a wonderful neighbor, friend, and uniquely talented woman! My grandmother, Lillian Carson, spent many days with Joretta at Community Club events and luncheons.
Love & prayers for the family, she was truly a jewel.

Buttercups are blooming now might be the refrain if Joretta were writing today, or earlier in the spring, she would say, the jonquils and rock flocks bring clouds of color along the bank of your (deceased) mother's (Velna) yard--in which she took such pride. In the mid-1970s, my mother wrote, Joretta and I visited more family cemeteries to document information for Margaret Wallis Haile's Dillingham of Big Ivy...book. In a telephone call, my brother Marty would say, I plowed the ground for Joretta' garden and we would talk about the bountiful vegetable crop and the ever in blossom flowers that Joretta would guide into season.
Joretta was born in December of 1932, after my sister JoAnn was born in July; JoAnn graduated from Barnardsville High School a year before Joretta. When nurse Joretta worked in Dr. Sprinkles' office in Weaverville, my sister Norma was teaching in Weaverville Elementary School. Later Norma's historical writing and publication would supplement early research of Joretta and my mother. Also, When I visited family each year, I saw Joretta and she would tell me news of her sister Annabelle, who is a few years older than me--and as lovely as Joretta and then tell me about what was happening with her beloved children, Richard and Annette. Oh, the family connections...
Today in my mind, Joretta is telling me that buttercups are blooming, in the annual fund raising letter for Absolum Dillingham Cemetery, because she stewarded collection of monies for the maintenance of the cemetery for decades. And, today, I will mail a contribution to the cemetery to cousin, Anne Dillingham--in loving memory of cousin, Joretta. Finally, whenever I visit the family community from (now) Chandler, AZ, or in my memories, I will feel Joretta's presence and goodness.

Joretta was a cornerstone of the Dillingham family. I will cherish memories of her as she served our church and our family cemetery. She loved to attend the annual Dillingham Reunion and knew much of the history connected to the community. We have lost a treasure trove of family stories. I am thankful for her life and love.

Please note that in my condolence, autocorrect misspelled my grandmother's name! It is Velna Dillingham.
Thank you.

Dear Richard and Annette,
I am sorry for the loss of your mother. I have such fond memories of Loretta. We kept in touch at Christmas for many years until it became too difficult for her to write. Joretta worked with other family members, my grandmother Verna Dillingham and Norma Morgan Dillingham, among others, to research the Dillingham family history book. She was active in the Big Ivy Historical Society and the preservation of the Carson Cabin. Many happy hours were spent together with these members of the family researching and preserving the history of their families.
I especially remember that Joretta spent many, many years helping to maintain and preserve the Absalom Family Cemetery by collecting our donations and organizing the mowing and maintenance. I hope the family can appreciate that my brother Reed Morgan and I will be making a contribution to the Absalom Dillingham Cemetery Fund in honor of her and all she did for the family throughout the years.
With love to you,
Sally Morgan Guérard
