Obituary of Joretta Mae Hall

Joretta Mae Dillingham Hall, age 89, died on April 24, 2022, at Anderson, South Carolina.

Born on December 14, 1932 in the Big Ivy Community of Barnardsville, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Elender Carl Dillingham and Lula Vivian Carson Dillingham.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Hugh Hall, a World War II veteran,  who passed away on December 5, 1992.  She was also preceded in death by two of her sisters, Ella Jane Capps and Mabel Louise Dillingham and her brothers, Elender Carl Dillingham, Jr., Charles Delano Dillingham and Lynn Parker.

Joretta is a direct descendant of Absalom Dillingham.  She was a proud member of the Asheville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).

Joretta graduated from the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing and worked in the office of Dr. Lawrence T.  Sprinkle in Weaverville, NC until her retirement in 1986.  After her retirement, Joretta owned and operated Slick Rock Farm,  raising and selling Piedmontese cattle.  After retiring from the cattle business, Joretta opened Craggy Mist Cattery, breeding and selling Rag Doll cats.

Joretta was a member of Mountain Valley Methodist Church where she served as secretary-treasurer for over twenty years.  She loved working in her garden and preparing meals for her family and friends.  She often used her nursing skills to care for sick and injured members of her community in the small rural town of Barnardsville where a trip to the doctor or hospital was an hour away.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Richard Norman Hall, Sr. and wife Debra of Starr, SC; her daughter, Annette Hall of Jonesborough, TN; and her sister, Annabelle Cole of Augusta, GA.  Joretta has four grandchildren: Leah Hall Hinds and husband Patrick, Caroline Hall Goldsmith and husband Adam, Richard Norman Hall, Jr. and wife Emily, and James Victor Hall.  There are six great-grandchildren: Madeline Elizabeth Hinds, Jacob Patrick Hinds, John Wyatt Goldsmith, Adaleigh Victoria Goldsmith,  Ella Lucille Hall, and William Carson Hall.

Joretta also has two nieces, Beth Whittenburg of Jacksonville, FL and Janet Durden of Augusta, GA; three nephews, Dwayne Crane, Gerald Parker and Timothy Parker all of Barnardsville, NC.  There is also one great nephew, John Tyler Parham and one great niece, Channing Gravitt.

The family respectfully requests the honor of your presence at the funeral service for Joretta on Thursday, April 28, 2022 at 2:30pm at West Funeral Home in Weaverville, NC.  Reverends Kenny and Edward Jeffries will officiate.  Burial will follow the service in the Absalom Dillingham Cemetery in Barnardsville, NC. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends will be on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 from 5:00 to 7:00pm at West Funeral Home. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Norris Hill Presbyterian Church, 152 Amberwood Drive, Anderson, SC, 29621 or Trinity Assembly of God, 617 University Parkway, Johnson City, TN 37604.
